On both sides of the camera before I was twenty. Two of these are mine, the rest are of me.

I was on the other side of the lens first. Borrowed coats, rooms that belonged to other people, a photographer telling me where to put my chin. Then someone put a camera in my hands and the whole thing turned over. I liked it better from behind. I still do.

Two of these are mine. The rest are of me, and I remember the afternoons behind all of them. The cold, mostly. And the long walk back through GUM with my hands pulled into my sleeves.

From Daria

Moscow first. Then New York, which I did not pick and would not trade. The islands whenever I can get there, and New York again after.

I arrived in New York as one person and became a completely different one, and it did not take long.

I had wanted Los Angeles. Fate arranged it so that another city met me with open arms, and I have been arguing with that city ever since. Love and hate relationship. I am still here.

There was a quieter place before it. The best and the saddest moments of my life happened there. Then I left.

New York taught me what I had never felt before: being in love, being alone, and knowing that my life belongs only to me and that everything depends only on my actions. It tested every cell of my body for strength.

I’m just a simple Russian girl.

Churchill Downs starts at 6:30 and the light on the backside is still blue. By the afternoon it was hats and silks and a crowd that sounded like weather.

At Flushing Meadows I have filmed Sabalenka, Sinner and Djokovic, and I will not shut up about the Honey Deuce. Vodka, lemonade, a float of raspberry liqueur, and three melon balls cut to the size of tennis balls, which is the entire joke. The clip where I explain the name has 821,000 views.

Three Weeks
in a Tent

A small family farm on Oʻahu, and a tent I slept in for three weeks. The cockroaches were almost the size of my hand.

Hawaiʻi had always been one of my dream destinations. My parents constantly asked when I’d return home to Russia, and I always replied, “Not until I’ve seen Hawaii.”

While I’m not heading back yet, I finally made it to Hawaiʻi, a place that has profoundly transformed my life. For almost three weeks I lived in a tent on a small family-owned farm on Oʻahu. After the frenetic pace of New York, it felt like a rejuvenating breath of fresh air.

Born and raised in Moscow and moved to NYC after, I was a true city girl. In New York, people hustle for money, recognition, and success, just like I did. But somewhere along the way, I forgot what happiness felt like. Hawaiʻi taught me to find joy in the small, everyday moments. I found happiness in planting pineapples, getting my hands muddy, eating fresh food.

Life on film lately. Love y’all, I’m blessed.

The rolls come back in batches. I post them months late, in parts, out of order.

Field notes, Oʻahu

A tumble down a mountain added a touch of drama.

Surfing. Snorkeling. Paddleboarding. Sleeping in a tent. All of it for the first time.
